When I was younger, my mom travelled a lot so she had to bring a cellphone with her. I remember how big phones were at that time. The handsets were not too big but the batteries had their own shoulder bag. You can only imagine how bulky these things are.
After a few years, generation 1 of cellphones were produced. This was also marked as the start of GSM which enabled the short messaging system. Commercials at that time were targetting people who are unable to speak, so instead they use text messaging to communicate. During this time, I was the only one in class who has heard of this feature, and using a handset which was a lot bigger than a bar of soap, I used to text myself. After a few months, Nokia released the third generation of cellphones, then costing a few thousand. Mobile phones at this time were considered as luxuries and were very expensive. A decade has passed since then and most mobile phones have not only customizable ringtones but also, high tech features like email push, mp3 and video playback, mobile internet connection, and easy sharing of files with another mobile phone through bluetooth or infrared.
